Pregnancy and maternity discrimination is still a huge problem in the UK and this appears to have been exacerbated by COVID-19. A TUC study carried out in June 2020 found that 1 in 4 pregnant women and new mothers experienced unfair treatment or discrimination at work since COVID-19 began. In November 2020, the Fawcett Society reported that a third of working mothers had lost work or hours due to a lack of childcare during COVID-19, a figure that rises to 44% when it came to BAME mothers.
Under the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 1996, Maternity and Parental Leave etc Regulations (MPL Regs) 1999 and the 2010 Equality Act there is strong protection for pregnant women and those on maternity leave against unfavourable treatment or dismissal.
